In early April, the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) released a statement noting that prescriptions would be required to access contraceptives such as birth control pills, patches and injections.
Under the MOHW rule, a qualified healthcare provider must assess a patient's risk factors before prescribing, to determine whether the option is appropriate and safe for the individual. BNN expressed concern that the regulation limits access to contraception and may unintentionally restrict timely access to critical sexual and reproductive care for women and girls.
In its release, BNN stated: "Access to contraception is not only a health issue. It is a matter of gender equality, fundamental autonomy and dignity." The statement pointed out that barriers to accessing contraceptives can create implications beyond individual health, touching broader social and economic wellbeing.
The network urged constructive dialogue around the issue, and meaningful engagement with civil society before the development and implementation of policies of this kind.
