Reflections on Belize Wi Redi: Groundwork for Change

By Nicole Wood

The Belize Wi Redi! campaign was launched in 2024 to restart an important national conversation about the Equal Opportunities Bill (EOB), which was first proposed in 2019 and had fallen into the background of national and political discussion. From the beginning, the overarching objective has been to see the EOB passed into law, and while that goal has not yet been achieved, the education and sensitization efforts have had real impact. The campaign has helped bring conversations about discrimination, fairness, and equal treatment back into the spotlight and has encouraged broader public engagement with these issues.

A key strength of the campaign has been its messaging, with the phrase Protect 21. Protect Everyone. resonating widely because it clearly communicated that the Bill is not about benefiting a select few, but about protecting all Belizeans. It helped many people see themselves reflected in the conversation and understand that equality protections are relevant to everyday life.

The Belize Wi Redi! PSA video highlighted findings from a professional 2022 survey on National Values, anchored by the survey results which clearly demonstrated that “in Belize, we believe in fair treatment and supporting one another, and our country is at its best when we come together for the greater good.”  Designed to be inclusive and accessible, the video featured signed language and was translated into Spanish, Garifuna, and three Maya languages to ensure the message reached a wider cross-section of Belizean society and reinforced the campaign’s commitment to accessibility and respect.

Two casual social media surveys also played an important role, helping assess public understanding of the Equal Opportunities Bill, measuring familiarity with the Belize Wi Redi! campaign, and collecting direct feedback from participants. Many respondents also shared personal experiences or observations of discrimination, providing valuable insights and quotes that continue to inform messaging and outreach. Over time, social media polling has shown increased public understanding of the EOB and related issues, highlighting the cumulative impact of sustained information campaigns since Belize Wi Redi! launched.

The campaign’s digital growth, now exceeding 5,600 followers, reflects a deliberate and responsive approach to social media outreach. Close monitoring of comments and engagement helped identify which content resonated most, while selective paid promotion of certain social media posts ensured that effective messages reached the audiences most likely to engage. This combination of listening, adapting, and targeting has been central to the campaign’s online success.

Looking ahead, the digital audience continues to be engaged, and sensitization efforts are well positioned to continue with the use of emerging social media trends and tactics to keep the conversation going. Feedback from the casual surveys has also pointed to a desire for more in-person education and outreach, which is something that could be explored going forward where possible.

Belize Wi Redi! has shown that when information is clear, inclusive, and grounded in real experiences, people are willing to engage. While the work is ongoing, the campaign has helped lay a strong foundation for building broader public support, sustaining momentum, and moving the Equal Opportunities Bill closer to being passed.
