Youth development, conservation, cultural preservation, environmental action, and a range of other causes critical to Belize’s sustainable future received a major boost this May. Twenty-two civil society organizations (CSOs) from across the country were officially awarded microgrants through a partnership between the Belize Network of NGOs (BNN), the Belize Audubon Society (BAS), and the European Union (EU).

The award ceremony, held at the University of Belize (UB) campus in Belmopan, marked a significant milestone in efforts to strengthen the capacities of grassroots organizations working in diverse sectors and communities. The microgrants are intended to help these organizations build operational resilience, train staff and volunteers, and scale their impact for long-term sustainability.
The selected organizations represent a rich cross-section of Belize’s civil society landscape, from emerging youth-led groups to longstanding community-based initiatives. Each grantee underwent a competitive selection process and submitted proposals that demonstrated clear vision, community impact, and alignment with the project’s broader goal: to strengthen CSO contributions to national development and good governance.

The microgrant program is part of a wider initiative funded by the European Union (EU) to enhance the enabling environment for CSOs and to foster inclusive, transparent, and participatory governance in Belize.
BNN and BAS, both long-standing advocates for civil society empowerment, will continue to provide technical support to the grantees throughout the life of their projects. This includes capacity-building workshops, networking opportunities, and mentoring to ensure that the microgrants generate lasting benefits.

As Belize continues to navigate the challenges of development, climate change, and social equity, the strengthening of civil society has never been more important. The microgrants represent not just a financial support but a reaffirmation of the critical role CSOs play in shaping a just, sustainable, and inclusive future for all.
